Reflection from week 1 to week 9

Reflection (WEEK 1 –WEEK 9)

1.What have I learned so far?

Throughout week 1 and week 9, I really enjoyed learning English for the first time. I have learnt the basic grammar and sentence structure rules of English, which aid me to know where my mistakes are. I have learnt the importance of citations, which I never knew that there is a need for it. The grammar lessons and practices online have helped me to be more aware of each sentence and be more sensitive to keywords in the passage. Comma Splices and sentence fragment seems to be something that I have made all these years, which I never understand why, but now I do. Thankful for this QET that I am able to be not afraid of learning English and to learn from the basics that I have missed out when I was younger.

2. What have I improved on? (Content, structure &language)

I have improved in terms of the structuring of the essay. Most importantly, I have learnt how to write effective topic sentences and thesis, which I never knew how I could contain the meaning, and reduce the length of the sentences.  Citations were included ever since I knew about it. For language, I feel that I have improved but I still do make mistakes due to the lack of exposure and practice.

3.What would I like to learn from week 10-week 12?

I would like to learn how to write good topic sentences and thesis again. Grammar quizzes might help. Assessing the questions and extraction of evidence from the articles might be helpful too. Have a trial test to know where you are and what can I improve on as a whole. Dealing with different questions.

4. Feedback:

 - Did visual and audio feedback help and how?

Both visual and audio feedbacks are very helpful in helping me to correct my draft 2.  With audio feedbacks, it gives a more effective interaction with the teacher and you are clear of your mistakes through the explanation given by the teacher. Both visual and audio feedbacks works perfectly together as you can see and hear for explanation at the same time, as if the teacher is right in front of you.

-       Comment on reasons you did not make changes (go through the points in      Summary and reader response)

There are moments that the interpretation of the comments is wrong. Therefore, no changes are made.

5. Weaknesses to work on?

Language is something that I have to practice and be exposed. Sometimes when you are writing, content becomes your main focus and you are not cautious of the grammar of your sentences. The skill of summarizing a thesis, topic sentence or content have to be practice, which encapsulates the whole essay or paragraph. Extraction of data or evidences seems to be a weakness for me too.

REFLECTIVE WRITING

When I was a child, I was a slow learner. I was not mature enough to realise the importance of studies. During the Primary School Leaving Examination(PSLE) years ago, I did not do well and ended up in the normal academic stream in my secondary school. When I told my mother about my results, she appears to be really disappointed. Instead of scolding me, she encouraged me to do well in secondary school to be promoted to the express stream in secondary one. Along the way back home in the car, tears came down the cheeks of my mother. That was the first time i saw her cry since young. At the point of time, I told my mother that I will do my best and promote into the express stream when I start school. Through this experience, I was really determined to do well in school and this was what motivated me in my studies throughout my secondary school days. However, I did not make it through the first year, but I persevered on and got what I wanted in the second year. This experience spur me to do my best in whatever I set to do in my life.
